A Community-Focused Approach
The Vernon Township Fire Department's Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Division has been a vital part of the community since its establishment on January 1st, 2020. The department is committed to providing comprehensive medical care, offering both Advanced Life Support (ALS) and Basic Life Support (BLS) services.
Staffing and Medical Oversight
The department's ALS ambulance at Station 432 is consistently staffed by a Paramedic and an EMT/AEMT, ensuring a high level of medical readiness. A second ALS ambulance is cross-staffed at Station 431. All EMS professionals operate under the expert guidance of Dr. Stephanie Gardner, who serves as the Hancock County Medical Director. This oversight helps maintain high standards of care and protocols.
Commitment to Training and Compassion
Vernon Township Fire Department prioritizes continuous education for its EMS personnel. They utilize both simulation and web-based equipment for training, demonstrating a dedication to keeping their skills sharp and up-to-date. Beyond technical proficiency, the department emphasizes the importance of compassion when caring for the community, highlighting a holistic approach to patient care.
Community Resources and Outreach
Safe Haven Baby Box
Station 431 is equipped with a Safe Haven Baby Box, a crucial resource for mothers in crisis. This device, operating under the state's Safe Haven Law, allows for the safe, secure, and anonymous surrender of newborns. The Baby Box is designed with an exterior door that locks automatically upon placement of a baby and an interior door for medical staff retrieval. The Safe Haven Baby Box organization also provides a 24-hour hotline (1-866-99BABY1), offering support and guidance to mothers considering surrender.
CPR Classes and Funding
Thanks to a grant received in 2020 from the Indiana Department of Homeland Security (IDHS), the Vernon Township Fire Department has acquired equipment to offer CPR classes to the community.
This vital funding for the IDHS Foundation comes from the sale of "Secure Indiana" license plates. These plates help support critical public safety initiatives throughout Indiana.
You can help continue this support. The next time you renew your vehicle's license plate, consider requesting a First Responders license plate, purchasing one online, or making a direct donation.
